MIL-PRF-16173. This performance specification covers solvent-dispersed corrosion preventive compounds that deposit thin,easily removable films after evaporation of solvent.

 

Classification

Corrosion preventive compounds covered by this specification are furnished in the following classes and grades.

Classes : The classes of the corrosion preventive compounds are designated by Class I (High volatile organic compounds (VOC)) or Class II (Low VOC) as follows:

Class I – High Voc – VOC exceeding 2.8 pounds per gallon (lbs/gal) (340 grams/liter).
Class II – Low Voc – VOC not exceeding 2.8 lbs/gal (340 grams/liter).

Grades : The grades of the corrosion preventive compound are the following:

Grade 1 – Hard film (175 degrees Fahrenheit (deg F) 80 degrees Celsius (deg C) minimum flow point of solvent deposited film)
Grade 2 – Soft film
Grade 3 – Water displacing, soft film
Grade 4 – Transparent, non-tacky film
Grade 5 – Low pressure steam removable film

Nox-Rust 501 LS / MIL-PRF-16173 Class I Grade 1

NOX-RUST 501-LS is a solvent type, cold application rust preventive hard film which meets the requirements of MIL-PRF-16173E, Grade I, Class I. NOX-RUST 501-LS is for the protection of metals when exposed to outdoor weather  conditions and for general purpose preservation, indoor or outdoor, with or without cover, for domestic and overseas shipment where a “dry to touch” film is required.


Nox-Rust 502 DLS / MIL-PRF-16173 Class I Grade 2

NOX-RUST 502 DLS is a petroleum based, solvent type, cold applied rust preventive formulated to fulfill the requirements of MIL-PRF-16173E Grade #2 Class I Specification. NOX-RUST 502 DLS deposits a grease like film which gives versatility in application. It is recommended for extended undercover protection of internal or external surfaces of machinery and/or materials with or without use of supplementary barrier materials. It is also applicable for outdoor protection for limited periods, where metal temperatures do not reach levels which produce prohibitive flow of the corrosion preventive film. NOX-RUST 502 DLS is completely miscible with lubricating oils which would eliminate the necessity of coating removal, in some applications.
Nox-Rust 503 DLS / MIL-PRF-16173 Class I Grade 3

NOX-RUST 503 DLS is for use where water or saline solution must be displaced from corrodible surfaces and the corrosion prevented or arrested. For protection of interior surfaces of machinery, instruments or material under cover for limited periods. For protection of critical bare steel or phosphated surfaces for extended periods when packaged with satisfactory barrier materials. Nox-Rust 503 DLS is a solvent type, cold application, rust preventive, low voc soft film that meets Specification Mil-PRF-16173E, Grade 3, Class I.

Nox-Rust 110 DLS / MIL-PRF-16173 Class I Grade 4

NOX-RUST 110 DLS is a wax-based, solvent type, cold applied, corrosion preventative designed for use on ferrous and non-ferrous metals when exposed to indoor or outdoor storage conditions. NOX-RUST 110 DLS deposits a transparent, firm, wax-like film that is readily removable by conventionally used solvents or degreasing methods. NOX-RUST 110 DLS is formulated to fulfill the requirements of MIL-C-16173E, Class I, Grade #4 Specification.

Surface Preparation

The maximum performance of NOX-RUST 501-LS can be achieved only when the metal surfaces to be protected are clean, dry and free of rust, oil and mill scale. Daubert Chemical Company recommends that the metal substrate temperature be 50-95°F (10-35°C) at the time of product application.

Application

NOX-RUST 501-LS is formulated to be used as supplied. Ensure uniform consistency prior to use. Continued stirring is generally not required. If the product thickens due to cold storage or loss of solvent during use, contact Daubert Chemical Company. DO NOT THIN NOX-RUST 501-LS. Incorrect thinning will affect film build, dry time and product performance. Daubert Chemical Company recommends that the ambient and product temperature be 50 – 95F (10 – 35C) at time of application. NOX-RUST 501-LS can be spray or dip applied.

Removal

NOX-RUST 501-LS can be removed with a solvent borne thinner, vapor degreasing, hot alkaline wash, or low-pressure steam. NOX-RUST 501-LS can be removed from fabrics by normal dry cleaning procedures. Avoid the use of chlorinated or highly aromatic solvents when removing from painted surfaces, as these solvents may adversely affect paint.

Storage

Store NOX-RUST 501-LS at temperatures between 50-95°F (10-35°C). Mild agitation is recommended prior to use.

Caution

Adequate ventilation is required for cure and to ensure against formation of a combustible liquid. THE PARTIALLY CURED FILM SHOULD NOT BE EXPOSED TO IGNITION SOURCES SUCH AS FLARES, FLAMES, SPARKS, EXCESSIVE HEAT, OR TORCHES. Refer to Daubert’s Material Safety Data Sheet for additional handling and first aid information.

Note: The addition of any product over or under this coating is not recommended. The maximum performance of NOX-RUST 110 DLS can be achieved only when the metal surfaces to be protected are clean, dry and free of rust, oil and mill scale. Daubert Chemical Company recommends that the metal substrate temperature be 50-95°F (10-35°C) at the time of product application.

Application

NOX-RUST 110 DLS can be applied by dipping, brushing or spraying. When dipped, the wet applied film thickness ranges from 3.0 to 4.0 and will dry in 1 hour to a film thickness of 1.5 to 2.0 mils. Under these conditions, NOX-RUST 110 DLS coverage is 700 sq/ft per gallon. NOX-RUST 110 DLS cures by solvents evaporation. Adequate ventilation is required for cure, and also to prevnt the formation of an explosive atmosphere. Further information is provided in the MSDS sheet.

Removal

NOX-RUST 110 DLS can be removed by using mineral spirits or kerosene-soaked towels. This product can also be removed by vapor degreasing.

Storage

Store NOX-RUST 110 DLS at temperatures between 50-95°F (10-35°C). Mild agitation is recommended prior to use.
